Performance Comparison In terms of comfort and build quality, the Husted is one of the best budget sleeping bags we've tried. Getting it to camp, however, is an arduous task because it's so bulky and heavy. The 4" wide piece of red fabric seen here serves as a passive draft collar. It nestles around your neck to seal heat inside the bag's main compartment and prevent it from escaping out the hood on cooler nights.
The hood drawstring on most sleeping bags has a tendency to dangle near your face, occasionally poking you in the nose or eye. The drawstring on the Husted is threaded beneath a simple piece of fabric to direct it away from your face. The stuff stack that this bag comes with is also unfortunately narrow and long.

In fact, it's so long that we couldn't pack it hot dog ways across the spacious bottom of this 75 L backpack. The Husted has convenient pull tabs on inside and outside of the main zipper that make it easier to operate. Super warm, cozy liner fabric, clever hood design, great value. Awesome warmth-to-weight ratio for the price, very compressible, tons of venting options, nice compression sack included. Thick synthetic insulation, well-balanced performance, easy to use zipper, included stuff sack.
Cheap, anti-snag zipper, sturdy materials, versatile synthetic insulation. Almost too heavy for backpacking, bulky, awkward stuff sack shape. Not as warm as its temp rating, no draft collar, uncertain durability.
Bulkier than expected, mediocre warmth-to-weight ratio. Moderate warmth-to-weight ratio, doesn't compress well, limited extra features. Heavier than average, bulky, no storage sack, no compression sack. A warm and affordable bag with an unfortunate weight problem. An exceptional deal for a lightweight bag that excels in wet conditions. When you buy something using the retail links in our stories, we may earn a small commission. But the weight and thickness of the the AXL sleeping pad caught my attention. My quilt was air-drying in a nearby bush. Nighttime temperatures were normally in the high 30s to low 40s, and I found the Insulated AXL to be sufficiently warm. Photo: Andrew Skurka.
